Why She Reads: Talking #TimeTravel

I first posted this blog on my Reality site in 2015 and I thought my visitors here would find it interesting.

I first posted this blog on my Reality site in 2015 and I thought my visitors here would find it interesting. Prepare to travel into the past!

In addition to officially passing five years of blogging (actually a little more but I was never great with math), and reaching the 600+ blog posts mark, I got to go to ArmadilloCon this weekend. It’s a science fiction convention held in Austin. It’s a fun place to catch up on what’s happening in the geek world, but my favorite part is the book talk with readers and authors.

As is typical (even for a hermit), I came back energized from time spent with other readers. I got to sit on a panel about time travel (awesome!). We ended up touching on time travel movies, too, but it gave me a chance to reflect on some of my favorite time travel books (which prompted me to swirl time travel into my books even though it almost makes my head explode when I write time travel).

The book that made me fall in love with time travel (though there was some question about whether it really was time travel – lol) was A Wrinkle in Time. Other books on my list were:

  1. Time and Again by Jack Finney (very fun time travel ala Somewhere in Time)
  2. Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger (have not seen the movie yet, but found the book a fun and interesting read)
  3. To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis (not the only time travel book she wrote but loved the title so that’s the one I picked.)
  4. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (I want a time-turner!)

And if you want to build your own time machine, there’s even a book for that:

Plans for Time Travel Machines That Really Work – Revised and Updated Edition: How to Move through Time and Space by Patricia C. Ress and Steven Gibbs (I had an old edition of this on my wish list and checked it out and was delighted to find this updated edition available again – at least until the Men in Black suppress it again…) The original edition had some reviews that didn’t make it to this edition, which is sad, so here’s the link to that one.

Do you have a book genre that you love, love, love? What was your “gateway” book to the genre that you love, love, love?

Perilously yours,

Pauline

P.S. As mentioned, I have swirled some time travel into some of my books, and it’s hard to pick just one for this P.S. moment, but am going to go with Tangled in Time today, mostly because I don’t think I’ve p.s.’d it for a while. And it was dang fun to write.
