Meet USAF Engineer Master Sergeant Briggs. The poor chap thought he was in for a dull birthday off-duty, but then he gets a mysterious gift from Area 51. Before he knows it, he's got Madison and her loquacious parrot, Sir Rupert, literally falling out of time and into his lap. Talk about a surprise party!
Why are we fascinated with cyborgs?
I suspect the main reason the idea of the cyborg is so enduring because it asks the question, “What does it mean to be human?”
A cyborg is made up of technology and organics, so which part is the “real” part?
And when we ask, “What if…”
And the fun begins.
My journey into cyborgs took a circuitous route. Yeah, I know. Huge surprise that. But I didn’t want to do the standard tortured cyborg story.
But I also wanted to explore the same themes other authors have: agency, selfhood, humanity, etc.
My cyborgs start from a different place because they began as robots. So going halfway to human is pretty huge for them. And I’ve had fun taking the robots back to a human place and watching them try to navigate what that means. Their emotions, their bodily functions, and of course, how they they fall in love.
Because who and how we love is at the core of the human condition, IMHO.
What do you think of cyborgs?
Perilously yours,
